Chaparral High School Gifted Education Program
The Exceptional Children's Educational Act (ECEA) defines "gifted" children as: those persons between the ages of five and twenty-one whose abilities, talents, and potential for accomplishment are so exceptional or developmentally advanced that they require special provisions to meet their educational programming needs. Gifted students include gifted students with disabilities (twice exceptional) and students with exceptional abilities or potential from all socio-economic and ethnic, cultural populations. Gifted students are capable of high performance, exceptional production, or exceptional learning behavior by virtue of any or a combination of these areas of giftedness:
* General or specific intellectual ability
* Specific academic aptitude
* Creative or productive thinking
* Leadership abilities
* Visual arts, performing arts, musical or psychomotor abilities
The approach taken at Chaparral High School to meet the unique educational needs of our gifted population is the mindset, "it takes a village to raise a child". Administration, counselors and our outstanding teachers work to differentiate instruction and address social-emotional growth for each student. Additionally, Chaparral offers a menu of options to challenge and motivate each student in their own unique areas of strength. Advanced Placement, Honors courses, electives, and activities are designed to address the needs of high ability students.
In addition to Honors and advanced courses, student needs may be addressed through a variety of instructional and social-emotional practices:
- Affective guidance (ALP Goals)
- Differentiated curriculum, instruction & assessment
- Goal Setting (Advanced Learning Plan Development)
- College and Post-Secondary Planning in conjunction with ALP Goal(s)
- Access to Enrichment Opportunities
- Flexible Pacing and Grouping
- Curriculum Compacting
- Acceleration
- At Chap we strive to develop community and unity among our GT student population - socially supporting and encouraging one another in clustered GT Homeroom periods!
What can you as a parent do to be involved and support your student’s growth?
Partner with your student and log into Naviance to learn about the ALP (Advanced Learning Plan) goals set in August and September. Goal setting provides direction for our students as they move through their high school careers and beyond. We want our families to be a part of the conversation around goal setting and we want your input on how we can challenge your students in their own unique areas.
