Advisement & Homeroom
Advisement and Homeroom provide Chaparral High School students with dedicated time for academic support, personal growth, and important grade-level learning. Learn more about each program, including schedules, attendance and grading expectations, and frequently asked questions.

Advisement is designed to promote academic success and personal growth.
It provides students with designated time to make up work and receive targeted academic support.

How Advisement Works
Students may visit up to two teachers during Advisement, one during each session. Students must make arrangements ahead of time and obtain a paper pass from the teacher they plan to visit.
Teachers will only be available during either Advisement A or Advisement B, based on the schedule above.
Grading & Attendance
Advisement is graded on a Pass/Fail basis.
- Seven or more unexcused absences will result in an F for the semester.
- A grade is given for both Advisement A and Advisement B.
- Advisement grades are documented on student transcripts but are not calculated into GPA.
- Students must be in their seats at the beginning of Advisement A at 7:45 a.m. and Advisement B at 8:35 a.m.
- Students may be excused from Advisement if a parent or guardian contacts the attendance office.
- Unaccounted absences will automatically become unexcused after 48 hours.
The FAQ materials also emphasize that an excused Advisement absence does not negatively affect a student's grade.
Traveling During Advisement
Traditional paper passes are required for student travel during Advisement. Students must obtain a pass before Advisement begins from the teacher they plan to visit.
In general, students will not be allowed to travel during Advisement without a teacher pass. Some additional passes may be available for specific circumstances, including GO passes, NHS and Counseling All Class Passes.
Student Expectations
As members of the Chaparral community, students are expected to demonstrate respect, kindness, understanding, tenacity and integrity.
Students should:
- Place cell phones in classroom pocket storage upon entering. Students may borrow a school Chromebook if they need to access Canvas or Google Drive.
- Bring necessary study materials or reading materials.
- Maintain a quiet, productive and respectful working environment.
- Use courteous language, practice self-discipline and communicate with positive intent.

Homeroom is designed to promote personal growth and provide students
with dedicated time to participate in school-wide and grade-level activities.
How Homeroom Works
Homeroom begins at 7:45 a.m. with a grade check or, for ninth-grade students, a Link Crew leader check-in.
A Seminar lesson begins at 7:55 a.m. and continues until 8:25 a.m. Seminar provides students with non-academic, skills-based lessons designed to help them successfully navigate high school and beyond.
After Seminar, students will either:
- Participate in a grade-specific activity or event, or
- Visit a teacher for academic support.
Grading & Attendance
Homeroom grades are based on student performance on Seminar quizzes. Each quiz includes three questions based on the lesson content.
- Seven or more unexcused absences will result in an F.
- At the end of the semester, Homeroom teachers report a Pass/Fail grade based on quiz performance, provided the student's attendance is acceptable.
- Unexcused absences can result in a failing grade even when quiz grades would otherwise be passing.
- Students must be in their Homeroom classroom by 7:45 a.m. for attendance.
- Planned absences should be reported to the attendance office by a parent or guardian before class.
- Unreported absences automatically become unexcused after 48 hours.
Homeroom appears on a student's transcript but does not impact GPA.
Seminar Exit Quizzes
Students' Homeroom grades are based on Exit Quizzes following Seminar lessons. Quizzes are available through the student's Homeroom Canvas course.
Although quizzes are due Thursday evening, the module remains open until the following Tuesday. Students must complete the quiz to receive credit.
Traveling During Homeroom
Students may be released during Homeroom:
- By announcement
- By their teacher
- With a paper pass
Unlike Advisement, the Homeroom materials specify that these passes are not obtained in advance.
Student Expectations
Students are expected to follow the same expectations during Homeroom as they do during Advisement, including being prepared to work, maintaining a respectful learning environment and following classroom expectations for cell phones and technology.
